FAQs
SPRAY TANNING
TANNING QUESTIONAIRE - Fill this out to help the technician give you the best tan!
How long does a spray tan take?
The actual spray application takes about 10–15 minutes, but I allow a full 30 minutes for your appointment to give us time for consultation, questions, and drying.
How should I prepare for my spray tan?
Remove hair in any areas you normally shave or wax at least 24 hours prior.
Schedule hair appointments, manicures, or pedicures before your tan (ideally the day before).
Exfoliate thoroughly to remove dead skin and help your tan absorb evenly.
Hydrate your skin well the night before, especially elbows, knees, feet, and hands.

What should I do the day of my appointment?
VERY IMPORTANT!! - Arrive with clean, dry skin (no lotion, deodorant, jewelry, or makeup).
Wear loose, dark, cotton-based clothing that doesn’t cling.
Bring flip flops to avoid rubbing your feet.
If it’s raining, come with loose full-coverage clothing and an umbrella — water can cause streaks.
Can I WEAR DEODORANT TO MY SPRAY TAN APPOINTMENT?
No. Please avoid wearing deodorant on the day of your spray tan appointment.
Many deodorants and antiperspirants contain aluminum, oils, and other ingredients that can react with the tanning solution. This reaction can cause the underarm area to turn green, gray, or slightly discolored, especially during the development period.
Even “clear” or natural deodorants can leave behind a residue on the skin that prevents the spray tan from developing evenly.
For best results, arrive with clean, product-free skin — including no deodorant, lotion, perfume, or oils.
If needed, you can reapply deodorant after your first rinse once the tan has fully developed.
How long will my tan last?
With proper care, your tan should last 5–9 days. To extend your glow, moisturize daily and avoid chlorine and heavy exfoliation.
HOW LONG SHOULD I LEAVE THE SOLUTION ON / WHEN DO I RINSE?
Your rinse time depends on the custom DHA level selected during your consultation and the depth of color you want to achieve.
Most rapid spray tans can be rinsed as soon as 2–3 hours after application.
Your exact rinse time will be determined through consultation and is at the discretion of the spray tan artist and the client, based on your skin tone, desired depth of color, and event timing.
Important:
Your spray tan continues developing after you rinse and will reach its final color approximately 24 hours after your appointment.
During this development period, avoid:
• Sweating or heavy workouts
• Swimming or getting wet
• Applying lotions, oils, deodorant, or perfume
These can interfere with the development process and affect your final color.
WHAT IS DHA IN SPRAY TANNING?
DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) is the active ingredient in spray tanning that creates your sunless tan.
It is a naturally derived sugar that reacts with the amino acids in the top layer of your skin. This reaction creates a bronzed color that looks similar to a natural tan.
DHA only affects the outermost layer of skin, which is why your spray tan gradually fades as your skin naturally exfoliates.
At Phoenix Salon + Spa, we use professional spray tan solutions that range from 8%–16% DHA, allowing us to custom color match your tan based on your skin tone and the depth of color you want to achieve.
Your tan will continue to develop for up to 24 hours after your appointment, reaching its final color once the DHA reaction is complete.
WHEN CAN I APPLY LOTION AFTER MY SPRAY TAN?
For best results, wait about 12–15 hours after your appointment before applying lotion. This allows your spray tan to finish developing in the skin.
After this time, begin moisturizing daily to help maintain your color and ensure an even fade.
Important:
Choose an oil-free lotion. Oil-based products can break down the spray tan more quickly and may cause the color to fade unevenly.
Avoid products containing:
• Oils (such as coconut oil, mineral oil, or body oils)
• Exfoliating ingredients like AHA, BHA, retinol, or scrubs
Using a gentle, oil-free moisturizer daily will help your tan last longer and fade more naturally.
What should I do after my spray tan?
• Rinse according to the instructions provided during your consultation.
Higher DHA rapid blends may be rinsed in as little as 3 hours, while lighter blends may require a minimum of about 8 hours before the first rinse.
• If sleeping in your tan, wear loose dark clothing and keep the room cool to avoid sweating.
• Avoid heavy exercise, sweating, or getting wet until your first rinse.
• Do not use body wash at your first rinse — simply rinse with lukewarm water. You may use gentle, non-bar cleansers starting with your second shower.
• Your spray tan will continue developing for up to 24 hours after your appointment.
• After 12–15 hours, begin moisturizing daily with an oil-free moisturizer to help extend the life of your tan and ensure an even fade.
• Always wear SPF — spray tans do not provide sun protection.
Avoid alcohol-based or aerosol sunscreens, as they can dry out the skin and cause your tan to fade unevenly. Instead, choose a hydrating SPF lotion to help protect your skin while maintaining your spray tan. The salon carries several excellent options that are spray-tan friendly.
• Before your next spray tan, exfoliate thoroughly 24 hours prior to your appointment. For consistent color, most clients tan every 7–10 days.
How does spray tanning work with mature or wrinkled skin?
Spray tans can look beautiful on all ages, but it’s important to know that on skin with deeper wrinkles or folds, the solution may settle unevenly. This can cause some areas (like inside folds) to fade faster or look lighter once the tan begins to wear off.
To keep your results looking smooth and natural, I recommend:
Paying extra attention to hydration and exfoliation before your appointment.
Using a self-tanning lotion or mousse at home between appointments to gently blend areas that lighten more quickly.
I’ll guide you through the process and help you choose the best approach so your glow looks even and confident.
Can I wear my own bra or underwear during a spray tan?
Yes! You are welcome to wear whatever makes you most comfortable — bra, underwear, swimsuit, or nothing at all. We simply work around the areas covered so you’ll have tan lines where the fabric sits.
Do you spray tan men?
Yes! Spray tanning services are available for men. Male clients are required to wear underwear or a disposable covering during the service.
Do I need to remove my makeup if I don’t want my face sprayed?
Yes. Even if you choose not to tan your face, it’s best to arrive with clean, makeup-free skin so we can properly prep and avoid any transfer to other areas. We will completely skip your face if you prefer.
Do you offer lighter spray tans for older or fairer skin tones?
Absolutely. Every tan is customized, and I can select a softer, lighter shade that complements mature or fair complexions for a natural, sun-kissed look.
I’ve had a mastectomy and feel self-conscious — is that okay?
Yes. This is a safe and respectful space, and your comfort comes first. We’ll work together so you feel covered and supported, and you can guide me if you’d like any adjustments.
